Venus is in transit to the other side of the Sun!!!

Last night I noticed that Venus was not in the western sky like it usually is every night. I figured perhaps I was on drugs :), or maybe Venus was moving to the other side of the sun as it does every few months.

This article in the Republic seems to say that Venus is moving to the other side of the sun. In Phoenix on Tuesday June 5, 2012 from 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM Venus will move across the sun causing a tiny solar eclipse.

While Venus frequently moves to the other side of the sun it is rare that we get to see a solar eclipse by Venus, like we will see this coming Tuesday.

Phoenix temperatures hit 111, a new record for June 1

The Arizona Republic-12 News Breaking News Team

Temperatures reached a blistering 111 degrees Friday, making it the hottest June 1 that Phoenix has seen since 1977, according to the National Weather Service.

Friday's high topped the previous June1 record, which was set in 1977 at 110 degrees. Friday also marked the hottest day so far this year in the Valley.

The excessive-heat warning issued for Friday spurred a "heat relief day" at the Human Services Campus, near 12th Avenue and Madison Street, said Holly Zoe, a program coordinator with the organization.

The day included an ample amount of water, checkups by the Phoenix Fire Department and open buildings for the homeless to rest in, Zoe said.

The organization, in partnership with groups such as Central Arizona Shelter Services, St. Vincent de Paul and NOVA Safe Haven, works to end homelessness in the community by offering opportunities for housing, rehabilitation and employment services, Zoe said. [Hey, I'm homeless and I don't need any stinking help to deal with the weather. I think it's great. I will take a 111°F day, any day of the year over a freezing cold 60°F day!!!]

"I think they help us because they really care for people," said Nelson Rios, who has used services offered at the Human Services Campus and now volunteers there. "To them, everyone is special."

The organization opened its doors in 2005. The organization's officials chose its location because they wanted to be in the community they were serving and near other organizations they intended to work with, such as St. Vincent de Paul and Andre House, Zoe said.

"At the end of the day, we do this to keep people alive," Zoe said. "We choose to open our doors and provide them with their basic needs."

Nicholus Howard, who is homeless, said he was thankful for organizations that provide water, especially on such hot days.

"They give you water, and to me, water is water," Howard said. "You need it to live, and they know that."

Temperatures on Saturday are expected to hit 106 degrees, with 103 forecast for Sunday, said Charlotte Dewey, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. The early part of next week is expected to be cooler, with highs in the low 100s.

I saw another car accident

I saw another totally preventable accident today as I was waiting for the bus.

Some idiot pulled out of the gas station on Rural and Ray. He was going very fast and making lots of race car noises. The idiots fish tailed several times, and then slammed into a van that was going northbound on Rural.

It was surreal watching it happen.

It didn't look like anybody was hurt.

I would have loved to tell the cops what happened so the guy the idiots ran into doesn't get blamed for the accident. But I certainly won't.

Every time I deal with the pigs it seems like they are more interested in shaking me down and making me prove I am not a criminal.

First they want to search you for the "safety of the officer".

It's really not for the "safety of the officer", but so they can arrest you if you have any illegal drugs or guns.

Second they want your name, birth date and and other personal information, not because they need it but so they can verify you don't have any warrants out for your arrest. And of course they keep that forever in their police computers so they can hunt you down and arrest you if they later decide you are a criminal.

I don't need to be abused by the piggies so I won't waste my time getting involved.

June 4 - A lunar eclipse??

Next I figured it was clouds blocking the moon, but then the sky was cloudless, and how often do you have perfectly round clouds that block the light from the moon and make it look like an eclipse.

I noticed the eclipse at about 4 am when I got up this morning. The eclipse seemed to end about 5 am. As it got light out I noticed that there wasn't a cloud in the sky, so the moon certainly wasn't being blocked by clouds.

I just google lunar eclipse and yes the newspapers are reporting an eclipsed this morning.

Last week there was a cool solar eclipse where the moon blocked the sun.

Tomorrow there is another eclipse where Venus will block the sun. It's called Venus in transit.

The image that follows shows how the eclipse will look when viewed from Los Angeles, California.

I suspect the view will be pretty much the same from Phoenix, Arizona because we are the same latitude as Los Angeles.

The folks at NASA say it's safe to view the Sun looking thru a number 14 welding glass. I have a 10 and 5 glasses which I will combine giving the protection of a 15 welding glass and look at the eclipse thru it.

I saw the Venus eclipse or Venus in transit

I looked at it thru a #15 welding glass, well really two welding glasses, a #10 and a #5 which give the protection of a #15 lense.

I have bad vision and had a hard time seeing Venus, but it was like a tiny tiny dot that I could barely see.

The two people I saw it with didn't have any problem seeing Venus and they thought it was pretty cool.

I also took some photos but they didn't come out very well.

I put the welding lenses in front of my camera to shoot the photos.

But the cameras computer got confused and held the shutter open for too long, making it impossible to see the black dot which was Venus.

On this camera I don't have a way to directly control the shutter speed so I didn't bother trying to get a better shot.

I could have bumped up the film speed to ASA 1600, which would have made the shutter open for a much shorter time giving a better photo, but I didn't think of that until it was too late.

On my old Nikon FG camera I could have set the shutter speed directly, but the government stole that when they seized my home. And of course that was an old fashioned camera that uses film, not the modern digital cameras everybody uses now.

Worst Computer Books I have ever read

A couple of weeks ago I bought a used book at the Chandler Library titled AJAX for Dummies for 50 cents. I paid 49 cents too much for the book. It was written by Steve Holzner, PhD. That turned out to be far worse then Harley Hahn's book on Unix.

In the book AJAX for Dummies, Steve Holzner, PhD really doesn't explain how anything works, but rather gives a bunch of cut and past examples and barely explains them at all.

A run in with an owl

Then the thing scared the sh*t out of me and took off flying. I think it was a monster owl.

The city of Phoenix has 5,000 cops working for them.

I stopped eating at Mr. Burrito Mexican Grill

I don't have any problems with Filibertos, they always treat me good.

But the new lady usually doesn't open up until after 6 a.m., which is far too late for me, so I started going to Mr. Burrito's Mexican Grill. It's on Beck and Broadway in Tempe, where the old KFC used to be.

I can eat, read my newspaper and be out of their before 6 a.m.

They also treat me good, but I am kind of ticked because the owner seems to be overcharging me by 2 cents.

When the woman rings up my bill the price is $2.18 which includes tax. That is $1.99 + 19¢'s in tax.

When the owner charges me on Wed & Thur the price is $2.20 which includes tax. That is $1.99 + 21¢'s in tax.

While two cents isn't a big deal I don't like to be taken advantage of. Hey I am a homeless person and every cent counts.

So because of that I will probably start going to Filibertos on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at the drive up window.

First day of summer brings potentially dangerous Northeast heat wave

Days like this make Nelson Sensenig really appreciate getting into the ice business.

"Where we bag the ice is about 40 degrees and the freezer is 20," said Sensenig, president of White Oak Ice Company in New Holland, Pa.

No doubt a good place to escape what could be record-breaking high temperatures in the northeastern United States this first day of summer.

Heat watches and warnings have been issued for several states. Temperatures in places like Boston, New York City, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia will soar to the mid- to upper 90s on Wednesday and Thursday. High humidity could make it feel like 100 to 105. Fans and air conditioners are in demand at stores from Chicago to Connecticut.

Fifteen to 20 degrees above normal could spell trouble for children, the elderly or people working outdoors.

"If you are in an area affected by the extreme heat, understand the warnings signs of heat-related illnesses," forecasters cautioned in an alert.

Sensenig's customers in northeastern Pennsylvania are getting the worst of it. They are under an excessive heat warning until Friday. Many cities are reportedly opening cooling centers and spray stations to help people escape the swelter.

"The combination of the heat and humidity will result in dangerous conditions during the afternoon and early evening hours," the National Weather Service said. "The urban centers such as center city Philadelphia will tend to hold the heat through the night that built up during the day."

Business is expected to double at White Oak Ice Company, where Sensenig estimates they will sell 30,000 bags of ice on Wednesday.

"The phone has been going," he told Yahoo. "People double up on days like this."

Forecasters said the Northeast will gradually start to cool off by late Friday and Saturday. But heat advisories could return by Sunday, when states in the Southwest are expected to get the summer's first wave of triple-digit temperatures.

But lately it has been too warm for me to wear the shirt when I go to sleep.

Valley Metro Ticket Machines at LINK Bus stops

This bus stop is a normal bus stop and it also serves a special LINK bus which is a high speed bus with limited stops that takes people from Chandler to the main light rail bus station on Sycamore and Main in Mesa.

Valley Metro currently has a dual priced fare system, where you pay $5.25 if you buy your bus ticket when you board the bus, but only pay $3.50 when you buy your ticket in advance.

I suspect these machines are being installed as some sort of government welfare program to allow people that ride the light rail to buy their ticket when they board the bus for a measly $3.50 instead of paying the standard cash price of $5.25.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive-heat warning for parts of Maricopa and Pinal counties until 8 p.m. Sunday.

This includes Greater Phoenix, Buckeye, New River, Wickenburg, Gila Bend and Florence.

Meteorologist Charlotte Dewey said the National Weather Service is forecasting a Sunday high of 112 for the affected areas. She said 115 degrees is the record on that day.

Dewey recommends people try to refrain from strenuous outdoor activities, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothes, and drink lots of water.

The article says not tax dollars are being used to build the project. That is a bold faced lie. Every passenger that flys thru Sky Harbor Airport is shaken down for a $4.50 fee, which is a tax they don't have any choice but to pay.

The article says the trail is 5 miles long. Again the train is probably close to 2.5 miles long, but the royals rulers of Phoenix are probably using to 5 mile total length of the train trip to make the project seem bigger and grander then it is, along with justifying the now $1.6 billion dollar cost.
