Occupy May Day protest planned for Scottsdale todaySourceOccupy May Day protest planned for Scottsdale today by Jose Zavala - May. 1, 2012 12:02 PM The Arizona Republic-12 News Breaking News Team The Occupy movement is planning an "anti-capitalist'' protest in downtown Scottsdale on Tuesday afternoon, one of many "Occupy May Day" events planned around the country. The protest is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., at the intersection of Marshall Way and Main Street in Scottsdale, according to a Facebook event page titled "MAYDAY General Strike Scottsdale." The page states that the group is calling for "a General Strike and anti-capitalist convergence upon the heart of metro Phoenix's upper-class enclave in downtown Scottsdale." The area of Main and Marshall Way, located southwest of Scottsdale and Indian School roads, generally is populated by locally owned, small businesses and is home to many of Scottsdale's art galleries. Participants are encouraged to dress in black. May Day often is observed as a day to recognize workers' rights. Jacob Sanders, 20, said he intends to come from Glendale to Scottsdale for the protest. Sanders said he has heard about the event for two months and has many friends who are involved with the Occupy movement. He hopes today's gathering helps spread the word about the movement, adding that U.S. involvement in overseas conflicts led him to get involved. "Everybody is getting tired of the idea of constant war and people dying all the time. It's not something I'm just going to stand by and watch," he said. Local businesses were advised of the planned protest. Christina Allen is a graphic designer who works at Occasions! By Design, an art gallery in the area of where the protest is set to take place. Allen said the Scottsdale Police Department informed her Monday there would be a protest near the gallery Tuesday. She was told the protest should clear out by 5 p.m. However, the group's Facebook page says the protest is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. and last into the evening.

1 arrested at Occupy May Day protestLet's face it they are not anarchists as they claim. They are socialists. These kids they've got no clue."Source 1 arrested at Occupy May Day protest in downtown Scottsdale by Ofelia Madrid and Jose Zavala - May. 1, 2012 08:01 PM The Arizona Republic-12 News Breaking News Team One man was arrested Tuesday at the "Occupy May Day" protest in downtown Scottsdale. Scottsdale police arrested one protester who was walking in the street as about 100 protesters walked from Old Town Scottsdale to Scottsdale Fashion Square. A Scottsdale police spokesman didn't have the name of the man arrested, but said the protester would likely be cited for obstructing the roadway. The protesters assembled around 5 p.m. on a circular roundabout at Marshall Way and Main Street in Old Town, in an area southwest of Scottsdale and Indian School roads. At 6 p.m. the protesters began their march to Scottsdale Fashion Square, near the more high-profile location near Scottsdale and Camelback roads, which one protester described as "the cavern of the rich.'' Another protester held a sign that said, "Save America, Buy American.'' The protesters chanted "Out of the stores, into the streets," as they passed Nordstrom. Diners at the Kona Grill just started at the protesters as they marched past them to a glass door entrance at Scottsdale Fashion Square. Security at mall locked the doors and did not allow them to enter. The protest was part of an "Occupy May Day'' event, one of numerous such demonstrations held around the nation. Organizers with the local Occupy movement used Facebook to organize what was billed as an "anti-capitalist'' protest. The Facebook page stated the group is calling for "a General Strike and anti-capitalist convergence upon the heart of metro Phoenix's upper-class enclave in downtown Scottsdale." Participants wore black. One protester, who declined to give his name, said he hoped the protest would encourage others to open their opinions, celebrate workers' rights and end capitalism. May Day often is observed as a day to recognize workers' rights. Jacob Sanders, 20, said he was coming from Glendale to Scottsdale for the protest. Sanders said he had heard about the event for two months and has many friends who are involved with the Occupy movement. "Everybody is getting tired of the idea of constant war and people dying all the time. It's not something I'm just going to stand by and watch," he said. Local businesses were advised of the planned protest. Nohl Rosen, a mobile computer technician from Phoenix showed up to protest the protest. "I'm all for free enterprise," he said.
