ASU unveils renderings of proposed renovation of Sun Devil Stadium by Jeff Metcalfe - Apr. 4, 2012 11:44 AM The Republic | azcentral.com Arizona State unveiled renderings of a new Sun Devil Stadium on Wednesday that includes a fabric roof and north end open to Tempe Town Lake. Steve Patterson, new ASU Vice President for Athletics, said the stadium could be constructed in phases over a four- to five-year period or faster if the football team moves out for up to two seasons. He said playing at Chase Field or University of Phoenix Stadium is not the preferred route but remains an option. A more detailed plan for the project, which will lower seating capacity from the current 71,000 to between 55,000 and 65,000, and funding, which could be as high as $300 million, is expected by June. "We want to make sure we stay on this site," Patterson said. "It's an iconic spot, one of the iconic spots in all of college football. The other 11 Pac-12 schools have spent almost $1.3 billion on football-stadium projects since 1998. The previous major renovation at 54-year-old Sun Devil Stadium was in 1989. Patterson has worked on the stadium project since being hired first as athletics Chief Operating Officer in July. He was named overall athletic director last week, replacing Lisa Love. "If you want to be the best, this is part of it," coach Todd Graham said. "This venue will put us at the top of the league. That means a lot of recruits and shows the commitment of the university and the athletic department to winning. "It's one of the great attractions coming here (from Pittsburgh). This shows we've got a dynamic vision here. We want it to be unique to Arizona. This is a very unique place. This is going to be the most visible building on campus and one of the most visible buildings in this state so it |
