Police: Man claims God ordered him to kill by Anna Gunderson - Apr. 17, 2012 11:08 AM The Arizona Republic - 12 News Breaking News Team Mesa police arrested a man Monday on suspicion of threatening his neighbors because God told him they were terrorists and needed to be dealt with. Police say Richard Thomas Hess, 42, told officers his neighbors were trying to kill him with poisonous gas. Hess said God told him to kill the neighbors because they are terrorists, court documents say. Hess went to his neighbors' apartment, in the 3400 block of East University Drive, to kill the man living there but chickened out, police say. The suspect instead punched the window with a knife in his hand and yelled at the neighbors to come outside so he could kill them with the knife, court documents note. Hess told his neighbors "today is the day you are going to die" and wielded a knife, according to police documents. Both neighbors were afraid for their lives, police note. The arresting officer requested a $10,000 bond because of the seriousness of the threats, court documents say. Hess was booked on two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of threatening and one count of criminal damage. |
