Here are some photos I took of an antique bicycle I saw on Mill Avenue in Tempe.
Please note that carbide powered gas head and tail light system. Water drips on calcium carbide which creates acetylene gas that is burned to light the headlight and taillight. Check out those rubber hoses. They allow the acetylene gas to go from the front headlight to the rear taillight. Pretty cool stuff. I asked the guy who had it for the date the bike was manufactured and he said he didn't know. |

The next two photos are of the headlight
which burns acetylene gas to create it's light.
The acetylene gas is created by dripping water on calcium carbide. The hose allows the acetylene gas to flow to the tail light. |

The next two photos are of the taillight
which burns acetylene gas just like the headlight.
The tube allows the acetylene gas to flow from the front of the bike where it is generated to the taillight at the rear of the bike where it is burnt. |
